The one-word answer that would make me hire you : City Superwoman, Nicola Horlick reveals the secrets to start-up success
Updated on: 15 Dec 2015
In the first of our Start-Up Secrets series, multi-talented entrepreneur and investment veteran Nicola Horlick reveals who inspired her the most and what she looks for in a potential business partner.
Nicola, who famously raised six children while working in finance and was dubbed the City Superwoman, also tells us the one word answer you need to utter to stand any chance of winning her over.
Who or what has most inspired you?
'My first boss, Leonard Licht, inspired me the most. [Nicola initially worked with Licht at SG Walburg and together they built up the specialist equity team of what became Mercury Asset Management.]
'He was the most famous fund manager in the 1970s and 80s and I was really lucky that I got to work for him. He was very entrepreneurial and had very different ideas. The management could not cope with that so he sat within the main organisation but we were doing something quite different, and that was really exciting - for me to be allowed to do something different.
'Warren Buffett said, if you take a lousy business and a fantastic management, the lousy business will usually win and that is what Leonard taught me - he would never invest in certain businesses, such as retail.'
What is the one piece of advice you would go back and tell your younger self?
