This didn't feel like an interview at all, it was as if we were chatting over chai, Ashwin Sanghi tells t2
Let's have fun," said Ashwin Sanghi as he settled down with a glass of iced tea in the Darjeeling Lounge of ITC Sonar, on Friday for a t2 chat.
One of your tweets quotes G.B. Shaw, "Virtue is insufficient temptation." What is sufficient temptation for you?
[Laughs out loud] Oscar Wilde said, 'The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it'. So probably that's what I've been doing all my life. Which probably explains why I am fat! (Laughs some more and then makes a serious face.) Well, I love thinking about what are going to be the reactions to a book, that's what motivates me to even do a book. It's not simply about telling a story, it's also the appreciation and love that I am going to end up getting from my readers. So I think all of us are influenced by that temptation… whether chocolate or whisky or adulation…. And my view has always been that people who don't succumb once in a while to temptation tend to be rather boring.
So, what have you succumbed to?
LOTS (roars with laughter)! Having said that, I think over the years, I've realised what makes me happy. There was a time when I was very social… these days I am so caught up with what I do as a writer, I have no time to be social… there was a time I was influenced by flashy stuff… expensive holidays, nice cars, a nice watch… these don't fascinate me anymore. I think to a certain extent, maybe, things like meditating, writing, they do it to you. Because you are suddenly living in a world which is exceptionally different… and you realise what actually gives you pleasure is not those things. I think in my case my writing has been more like a meditation. When I am writing a book, I am almost lost in my world… Everything else becomes unimportant. I really tip my hat to my wife, who puts up with a lot of nonsense. Touch wood, that way I have been really blessed. Had it not been for my wife, I wouldn't have got into writing. So now when she sometimes gets a little bugged with me, I say, see, you put me into this, so now don't crib!
