Deepika Govind, who launched her new line of cottons —Ecru and Abstract Truth—at her store Neel Sutra in Delhi, talks about why it's important to make cotton fashionable.
On venturing into cottons
I had attended a meeting with Fair Trade India officials recently where we discussed problems of cotton farmers at length. I realised I had to do my bit as well. For one, cotton should be made a fashion statement. For instance, crumples and creases in linen is fashionable, so we should celebrate the characteristics of cotton as well. We should create an identity for the cottons of India like Brazilian Lima Cotton, Egyptian Cotton and Swiss cotton. We don't explore the cottons from India enough. I have always worked with silks but ever since I have started living in Delhi, I realise the value of cotton!
