We could hear him barking even as we entered Karan Paul-Indrani Dasgupta's Alipore oasis of calm. Within seconds he was serenading us, his adorable eyes demanding a pat on the head or a belly rub. And within minutes we were in love with Fiji — Karan and Indrani's first pet — the seven-month-old golden retriever. "You cannot not enjoy! Sometimes we think of getting another dog. Then we are like, are we serious? Are we there already?!" laughed Indrani, former supermodel and now t2 columnist, as she settled down to chat Fiji with us.
Fiji was a wedding present, right? I actually asked for it. I have always wanted a puppy. I like Golden retrievers, Labradors, German shepherds. I thought as a first dog, a golden retriever was a good choice. They are gentle and supposed to be more friendly and beautiful to look at. They are cute! When I first saw him, he was so little that I could hold him in one hand. I think it was love at first sight. I know why it's called puppy love. He was lying on my belly and sleeping. You could feel that instant connect.
And you named him Fiji because... We wanted to name him after a place we really liked. We also thought of Bali. Simba was another name because he looked like a tiny lion cub! He's got such sweet, gentle eyes.
