Henry Ford advocated education for all ages. He famously said, "anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young." Yet, this is more challenging in the traditional system of classroom education where students are forced to keep up with their class, move on to other subjects or may even be mocked for being older then their classmates. The internet and smartphones have changed the dynamics of education and more importantly, learning. Besides being more accessible, there are no limits to what one can learn. Moreover, the gamification of learning has made it more interesting and children as well as parents are now embracing learning apps.
In this scenario, Indian EdTech startups are offering more than the traditional courses. EduRev, is one such startup which has made preparatory tests for IIT-JEE and other competitive exams like GATE, UPSC and others available on its learning platform. EduRev is an educational network with tools to simplify life of students, teachers and institutes and has harnessed the power of the internet to crowdsource its offerings. Networked India spoke to Kunaal Satija, founder of EduRev about the genesis of the startup, its growth and the changing landscape of EdTech as well as the evolution of the traditional Indian learner into a more dynamic and creative one.
Networked India (NI): EduRev seems to offer more than the traditional learning courses. Tell us more about this unique learning platform.
Kunaal Satija (KS): Yes, we provide quite a variety of courses from K-12 to Competitive Exams to even some courses for Professionals working/seeking jobs. We have been able to do that at such pace and quality is because of our model of crowdsourcing. Our complete focus is on building up a great platform. For all the content/courses we are aggregating all the best teachers from the country.
To further clarify, our focus isn't on building a courses marketplace but with EduRev we want to build the largest Educational Network. Courses is just one of the tools in the network to simplify lives of teachers and students. We also sell a B2B solution to institutes for teaching and managing classes better. We are putting up some more interaction and analytical tools to make it the one stop educational network for students, teachers, institutes and even parents.
NI: What led you to create a platform like EduRev?
KS: You know I had all decent grades across my school and college, but I was constantly bored and disengaged during my school and college life. Now both my school and college are well reputed in the country and I was always in an urban area but still even though I loved to learn, the institutes couldn't engage me well. So that was something which bothered me quite a bit, that students spend years in institutes completely disengaged and this is a problem I had to solve.
